Abstract
The purpose of this study was to grasp the suicide stigma structure according to demographic characteristics by developing a shortened version of the stigma scale after testing its validity and reliability. We conducted an online survey of 306 adults. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the existing scale consisting of 46 items and 7 factors needed to be modified to 24 items and 6 factors. Finally, we confirmed the six factors (Incompetence, Immorality, Selfishness, Sympathy, Antisocial, and Glorification) in the perception of Koreans toward suicidal people. In relation to demographic characteristics, gender had a statistically significant influence on ¡°Incompetence¡±, ¡°Immorality¡±, and ¡°Glorification¡± stigma, while age was significantly associated with ¡°Incompetence¡±, ¡°Selfishness¡±, ¡°Anti-social¡±, and ¡°Sympathy¡±. Although income levels had a positive influence on the ¡°Incompetence¡± stigma, it had a negative influence on the ¡°Glorification¡± stigma. The education level was confirmed to have a positive relationship with only the ¡°Glorification¡± among the six stigmas.
